When Should I Consider Memory Care for My Loved One?
Is your loved one struggling with Dementia or Alzheimer’s?
Among the most common and debilitating health issues that affect seniors are memory-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.
Dementia is defined as any cognitive condition that significantly impairs any of the following core mental functions:
- Communication and language
- Ability to focus and pay attention
- Reasoning and judgment
- Visual perception
With one or more of these functions significantly impaired, it can be extremely difficult for senior individuals to live on their own. Doing so can speed the onset of the degenerative disease in question, increase the risk of injury and accident, and place undue strain on family members and friends. At a certain point, extra care is essential.
Memory care is a special type of assisted living designed to give seniors with degenerative cognitive conditions a secure place to live and receive specialized care.
At memory care facilities, seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia live in specially designed rooms with close supervision and assistance from trained medical professionals. The staff at these communities help seniors with day-to-day tasks, administer medical care, and provide essential socialization. The best memory care communities offer structured activities and outings to help seniors socialize and stay stimulated, which studies have shown can greatly help mitigate symptoms of degenerative cognitive diseases and can even slow their onset.
