In the 60’s, surf culture was the way of life in San Diego. LUV President Joyce Frye reminisces, “It was 1960 when my son started surfing, and everything revolved around his new hobby. The surf culture became a part of our family. As I remember, The Endless Summer was the first real surfing movie about seeking the perfect wave, and I took the kids to a little movie theater in Ocean Beach to watch it – we loved it!”
Marcia Thaxton, Vice President of LUV, also grew up in San Diego and remembers, "My brother and I spent all of our time at Windansea Beach in La Jolla. Back in those days, girls didn't board surf because the boards were too heavy, so I learned to body surf and was out there riding the waves with the boys! I remember enoying that beach very much. We always stayed until the waves were flat and the sun went down, so I always got to see the beautiful sunsets."
Surf’s up! Please join us on Saturday, August 25th for the annual St. Paul’s LUV Gala at Paradise Point Resort & Spa in Mission Bay where we will celebrate “Endless Summer of LUV.” Marilyn McNair, Chair of the LUV Gala, notes, “So many of us have grown up appreciating San Diego’s beaches. I’ve spent much of my time enjoying the beach, the sun, the warm sand, and watching friends and family surf the local waves. That doesn’t include the hours upon hours of sitting on the cliffs and the pier of Ocean Beach watching those sets roll in. It seems befitting to celebrate our local surfing culture.”
All proceeds from the evening will go toward opening St. Paul’s second PACE Center in the South Bay, where hundreds of frail, low-income seniors in the South Bay will have access to healthcare that gives them the supports they need to safely age in their home with independence, dignity and choice.
We will be casual in attire, so throw on your elegant beach wear or your classiest Old Guys Rule shirt, load the surfboards on the Woodie, and head down to Paradise Point Resort & Spa for a totally warm summer night of tubular fun!

We hope you had a fabulous time at the 2011 LUV Gala at the beautiful Hilton Mission Bay! This year, LUV (Love Uniting Volunteers) and the planning committee presented LUV Gala in Paradise, and paradise it sure was!
During the reception, the sun setting and the palm trees swaying were the ideal backdrop for photos, tropical birds, and a lively silent auction.
The dinner portion of the event was just as entertaining! The very touching tribute to Barbara and Mark DeMichele was heartwarming, and the PACE video which highlighted the daily St. Paul’s PACE program illustrated just how important the LUV Gala is to our community.
The energy in the ballroom was spectacular, from the bidding battles of the live auction, to the happy feet on the dance floor!
