Alzheimer’s Disease Facts

Alzheimer’s Facts

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia in the world and affects millions of seniors across the globe. Characterized by marked memory loss and declining cognitive ability, Alzheimer’s can be particularly difficult to deal with — both for those afflicted and their families. However, proper care and attention can make life with Alzheimer’s significantly better for all involved. On this page, our senior care experts at St. Paul’s Senior Services provide Alzheimer’s facts and care recommendations. We also provide information on our very own San Diego memory care communities.

Alzheimer’s Disease Symptoms and Treatment

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s is distinguished on the physical level by specific changes or abnormalities in the brain. These abnormalities include deposits of the protein fragment beta-amyloid (commonly referred to as “plaques”) and twisted strands of the protein tau (“tangles”) as well as evidence of nerve cell damage and death in the brain.

Difficulty remembering recent conversations, names, or events is often an early clinical symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. Mood swings, apathy, and depression are also common early symptoms. Later-stage symptoms include impaired communication, poor judgment, disorientation, confusion, behavior changes, and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and walking. To date, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, proper care has showed marked results in slowing its onset and progression.
