News sources are often asking the public for help to find a lost senior with memory impairment. St. Paul’s encourages families to consider a safer alternative in care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias. St. Paul’s offers a secure senior day care program for those with mild to moderate memory impairment. Many families bring Mom or Dad in on their way to work knowing their loved one is safe and well cared for in the secure senior environment on Maple Street in San Diego.
What is unique about St. Paul’s Senior Day is that it is an Intergenerational program. Children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of age also attend the program and interact with the seniors several times each day.
Benefits of the Intergenerational program include promoting acceptance and understanding, developing empathy and respect and increased sense of worth for both seniors and children.
Activities include Arts (drawing, painting, music), Storytelling, Recreation (games, exercises, field trips), Nature (animals, plants, gardening, nature walks), Food (cooking, eating together), Teaching, Conversation and diverse culture participation for better ethnic understanding.
A family member stated “St. Paul’s Secure Senior Day Care has been a lifesaver for us… Now I know we are not alone. I know where there are resources and options…They show genuine care and compassion and it shows in their participants. There should be more centers such as these; more centers that remain affordable, are of very good quality and that accommodate their caregivers’ lives…They serve an important and sadly increasing population in our community.”
